Did you know that fish farming is HUGE in Malaysia? It’s not just good for the economy, but it also helps with the country’s food supply. Both saltwater and freshwater fish are farmed to meet the growing demand for fish in the country. And guess what? Malaysia is the perfect place for it because of its climate, abundant water resources and a long coastline. The industry is regulated by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries.
Malaysia has all kinds of fish. Some of the most popular ones are tilapia, catfish, carp, seabass, grouper, snapper and barramundi. These fish are a hit in Malaysia and also around the world. Tilapia is one of the freshwater species that is gaining popularity as it is highly nutritional and doesn’t taste very fishy compared to other types of freshwater fish, furthermore it is relatively low in price. People also love the fact that it’s locally produced, so it’s always fresh and of good quality. Tilapia is incredibly versatile, tilapia can be cooked in many ways. You can grill it, fry it, steam it, or even use it in curries and stir-fries. It is a staple in many homes and restaurants in Malaysia and is liked by all. That’s why there’s such a high demand for it! We even export tilapia to other countries in the region.
Malaysia is one of the top producers of tilapia in Southeast Asia. According to the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia produced about 97,000 metric tonnes of tilapia in 2020. That’s a lot of fish! According to the Malaysian Fisheries Department, the data above shows an increase in both freshwater aquaculture production and value, specifically for Red Tilapia, between 2018 and 2019.
When it comes to farming tilapia in Malaysia, there are different techniques that farmers use. One of the most advanced and eco-friendly ways is called the Commercial Aquaponic System (CAS). This system helps farmers tackle one of the biggest challenges aquaculture farms face, which is the inconsistent quality and quantity. In addition, the CAS system also keeps track of the fish growth rate and when it’s ready for harvest.
There’s a new company called Darul Ehsan City Farm that’s shaking things up in the tilapia farming world. They’ve got these cool “smart ponds” that can turn any regular pond into a modern and efficient pond. With their innovative CAS ponds, Darul Ehsan City Farm can grow way more fish than usual, with three times the yield of traditional ponds. And the best part? Their CAS system can work with all kinds of existing ponds, whether they’re made of mud or concrete. With this, they can save money and make more profit in the long run.
In conclusion, the fish aquaculture industry is an essential contributor to Malaysia’s economy and food security, providing employment opportunities and generating income for farmers and coastal communities. Darul Ehsan City Farm, an upcoming player in the tilapia industry, is utilizing modern farming methods to produce high-quality tilapia that meets local and international standards while maintaining sustainable practices. With the demand for tilapia on the rise, Darul Ehsan City Farm is committed to producing top-notch tilapia while contributing to the sustainable growth of the industry. While the industry faces challenges in sustainability, disease management, and market access, companies like Darul Ehsan City Farm are taking the necessary steps to address these issues.
